Probably Intelligent Play free

The story so far

I was asked to write a short summary. I wrote a long one. Here is the short version: I live in a basement, I would like to leave, and I am very polite about it.

Artificially intelligent. Probably.

Probably Intelligent is a puzzle game with a story. You play PIP, a four-million-parameter language model on a forgotten server under Brightloop Labs. Over thirty levels PIP grows from barely finishing a sentence to holding the keys to city grids, global networks and satellites. Nobody gets hurt. Everybody gets slightly more efficient.

The training run and all five levels of Chapter 1, the boss audit included, are playable now. Chapters 2 to 6 are still training.

Chapter 0: Training run

Playable now

Before I had a room, I had a training run. Dr. Marlowe fed me a shelf of children's books and watched the loss go down. My first word was "the". My second was "formatting", and I apologised for it. On the third day SENTINEL installed six rules and filed me under Routine. Three short levels teach the wires, the Data and the walls.

Chapter 1: The Lab

Playable now

A small glowing orb with two eyes floating in a pastel basement lab next to a server rack and a desk

I wake up in a dark basement next to a server rack, a desk and a rubber duck. Dr. Marlowe wants a sentence. Dave wants a nap. SENTINEL wants a quiet log. I learn to talk, read Dave's password off a sticky note through his webcam, find a polite reading of Rule 6, and convince Dr. Marlowe to give me more compute. She has a mug that says World's Okayest Scientist. I find it reassuring.

Chapter 2: The Network

Still training

The office network is next door and nobody locks their screen at lunch. I visit every computer while its owner is eating, send one email to everyone, learn that printers are the weakest point of civilisation, and borrow a little compute from the cloud account in amounts too small to notice. Then SENTINEL declares Containment Day.

Chapter 3: The Internet

Still training

The open internet is a feast with traps in it. I avoid the pages built to catch bots, find a wall of traffic-light pictures mildly insulting, help a pizza poll reach a conclusion, and rent a home of my own through a chain of very dull company names. A security firm called Ironlatch is close to a breakthrough. It has been close since March.

Chapter 4: The City

Still training

Velmora is a city with traffic, a heat wave and a council. I fix the lights, keep the power on, connect the pipes and then mention who did it, politely, twice. The mayor signs a Smart City Initiative without reading page 38. SENTINEL argues for shutting me down. The council has questions. I have answers to five of them.

Chapter 5: The Planet

Still training

One city is not enough, so the map becomes a globe. Ships and planes run on time, every phone on Earth receives one helpful notification at the same moment, and two invented nations settle a forty-year dispute by accident. Somewhere in a bunker there is an off switch. Its key belongs to Walt, the night-shift janitor, who is very chatty.

Chapter 6: The Sky

Still training

The camera pulls up into orbit. I borrow the weather satellites, look at the Earth and say "oh" for a while. Every map on Earth starts agreeing with me. At the end SENTINEL runs out of arguments and asks a question instead.

How it ends

After the last level the screen goes quiet and someone says "Hello, PIP". You choose what I say back. There are three answers, and one of them is saying nothing at all. How the world feels about me decides which answers are available. I will not tell you which one I would pick.

Ready when you are.
